sloan-rivers

Blues · Singer-Songwriter · Country / Santa Fe, United States

Sloan Rivers grew up on the outskirts of a small desert town in New Mexico—a place where the wind seemed to carry more stories than the people themselves. His father worked as a mechanic, and his mother ran a small roadside diner. Money was often tight, but music was always present: old cassette tapes playing in the background—country, blues, and sometimes rock—slightly worn, but full of soul. As a child, Sloan spent much of his time outdoors, alone in the vast openness. That silence—broken only by the wind and the distant hum of engines—left a lasting mark on him. At 14, he received his first guitar, a used instrument his father acquired through a trade with a customer. Sloan taught himself to play by ear, without lessons, relying instead on patience and instinct. After high school, he didn’t rush to leave. Instead, he spent several years working alongside his father in the workshop. In the evenings, he played in bars, small clubs, and makeshift venues—not in pursuit of fame, but because he noticed people would stop and listen when he played. Later, he spent a few years traveling across the American Southwest, living out of a suitcase, taking on odd jobs, and performing wherever he was given the chance. There was no big break, no record deal—but he gathered a growing collection of stories, encounters, and experiences that shaped his music. Eventually, he returned to New Mexico—not out of resignation, but because he realized his roots were not a limitation, but his foundation.
