Jeff Brown is a longtime ambient noise artist based out of the Seattle area, with albums on Further Records (Seattle’s own), Dub Cthonic, Histamine Tapes, Floppy Noise, and Rusted Tone Recordings. After spending the early 2000s in the Seattle Guitar Circle (part of Robert Fripp’s Guitar Craft program), Jeff applied New Standard Tuning to textures influenced by early electronics and noise, often using a guitar synthesizer system, and created the project Spacement. For more contemporary and melodic pieces, Jeff combines religious themes and overall melancholy under his own name, like on the album Forgive the Trespass. The guitar synth would be used to its full extent on the Blurred Spires duo project with Seattle musician Greg Weber. The duo did a modern take on the Fripp/Summers approach via guitar synth albums, available on New Motion. Taking inspiration from his teenage listening habits in the 90s, Jeff started the project Heretic Cross, which is Berlin School-style synths melded with the ambience of black metal, with the result being esoteric, cosmic horror-themed pieces. It is available on Weregnome Records and was initially an anonymous project to pay tribute to the clandestine nature of the 2nd wave of Black Metal and its dark ambient leanings of his youth. September of 2023 saw Jeff’s new Joshi-themed noise project Marine Wolves debut in a 3-way dance CD with Takeshita and Slit Throats. In the autumn of 2025 the hazy ambient synths of Cellophane Square was released on CD as “Courtrends” via Midnight Mall, not vaporwave but an adjacent, careful dose of nostalgia (the project is an ode to the PWN record store and the album to the Southcenter Mall). Jeff has performed all over the Pacific Northwest for decades, along with performances in Russia and Japan.
